Travel Splurge: Singapore Slings at Raffles

There's not much I like more in this world than a good cocktail and nowhere is there a more iconic experience than the Singapore Sling in Raffles Hotel's Long Bar. The five star hotel is a beautiful colonial building, an icon of Singapore and, of course, the prices reflect this. Let's face it, most backpacker budgets are not going to stretch to an overnight stay (no matter how super pretty the suites look). A little splurge on a cocktail is pretty good compromise.

Located in the heart of the business district, Raffles is easy to find. Just look for the gorgeous white Colonial building with the sweeping drive and half a dozen bellboys out front.

Non-residents are not actually allowed in the main building, the signs direct you around the building to the famous Long Bar. There’s a stunning courtyard on the way and a little Singapore Sling gift shop.

Home of the Singapore Sling, the Long Bar is located on the first floor. I didn't see any lifts in the vicinity so if stairs are a problem maybe ask at the gift shop before you get to the staircase.

Stepping through the doors of the Long Bar is like stepping back in time. You may be walking on crunchy peanut shells and sitting in wicker chairs but the room still has a feeling of decadence. Everything looks and feels luxurious and there's so much attention to detail. Even the ceiling fans are beautiful. You can easily imagine you're a 19th Century colonist, seeking refuge from the intense Singapore humidity.

Now for the best bit; drinks. Surely it's Singapore Slings all round? What happens if the concoction sounds like it's not your cup of tea? Or should I say, shot of gin? Fear not, there are seven variations on Singapore Slings available. The original didn't sound like my thing so I opted for the Summer Sling and I'm so glad I did. These are pricey cocktails and to order one you know you're not going to like simply because it's famous is a little ludicrous to me.

There's a lot of naysayers online, looking down on the Long Bar. Yes it's busy and yes you won't be the only tourist in the room but so what? The bar is beautiful and the drinks are tasty. Plus it is where the Singapore Sling was invented. If you want a taste of the old school glamour of the colonies, you can't get more authentic than Raffles.
