A Roman theatre for one

How many times have you gone to take a photo of that amazing attraction only to find a dozen randomers inadvertantly featuring in your perfect shot? Wouldn't it be great to have some of these sights all to yourself without a queue? That's just what happened to me last Autumn. Last November, my mother & l spent one amazing day in Cartagena in Murcia, Spain. Arriving into town about 9 am we had a leisurely breakfast before heading into town. The weather was glorious as we headed towards the old city walls and to the Calle Mayor (Main Street).

The plan was to head to the Roman theatre but it turned out to be more difficult than I had presumed. Being a massive historical building, I had assumed that it would have been easy to spot but the theatre was nowhere to be seen. I took a second to take photos of the pretty buildings in the square & noticed the tiny sign on this lovely pink building; El teatro Romano. If we hadn't paused at that exact spot we probably would never have found it.

Even though it was 10 minutes before the official opening the kind lady at the ticket desk let me in (and I managed to blag the student price - Score!). Firstly you walk through a small museum of artifacts before you get to the theatre. The museum had kind of an eerie vibe as I was all alone in the semi-dark rooms. The only ound was my own footfall so I hurried through this section to get to the theatre back out in the the bright sunshine.
Boy am I glad I did! Because of the early entry and the well disguised entrance, I ended up having the entire theatre practically to myself. There was just one other tourist & a security guard so I was able to take a lot of awesome photos without other people in the way. The entrance brings you out in the middle of the theatre.

Top tip, if you're afraid of heights or suffer from vertigo do not go to the top The steps are so steep & it is a lot higher than it looks l ended up scooting down on my bottom because the view made me a little queasy. Even though l got a couple of great selfies I think next time l would go along the middle and straight to the bottom those steps one nowhere near as steep and l was able to walk down them like a grown up. Yay me!

See the difference in the grey steps and the brown steps? Head straight down they grey if you think vertigo may be an issue.

The exit brings you out on a back street so I made my way down an alley back to the Calle Mayor to find my mother and explore the rest of the town. Warning: Most of our Euros for the trip quickly disappeared in the quaint and quirky shops of Cartagena. If you are short on funds skip the shops and lose yourself in the stunning surroundings. There's plenty to see...

Who else has had an attraction all to yourself? Was it creepy or amazing?
